LaVerne Simmons Memorial Scholarship
In an effort to keep my father’s name and memory alive, and to help me stay connected with my small-town roots, I have established a scholarship at Darrington High School in the amount of $5,000. The scholarship began in 2006, and is awarded on a yearly basis to the high school senior who best exemplifies the three qualities of humility, hard work and a heart to help others that I discuss at length in my book, Small-Town Heroes.
To raise money for the scholarship fund, I contacted a number of my friends and relatives from around the country to ask for their support in this effort. Approximately 40 individuals are participating in the four-year commitment, giving anywhere from $25 to $1,000 per year.
